C H I L D R E N with severe multiple congenital limb deformities associated with thalidomide are numerically few (22,48). Because of the severity of this disability, the associated deformities, and the psychological trauma to both parents and child, the thalidomide tragedy has served as a catalyst to study the congenital amputee in depth. There is still controversy concerning the appropriate prosthetic and rehabilitation program for these children, but the attention this tragedy has focused on other less-involved children perhaps will reap benefits far beyond our expectations (1,13,18,23,26,36,39,42). The possible factors associated with acceptance or rejection of appliances may be inherent in the appliance, or they may arise from the child's own frustration, the parental reaction (15,20,43), or other environmental factors. Retrospective studies of children who attend the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre for prosthetic management and a review of the relevant literature have been carried out in an effort to establish a pattern of management and to delineate topics for future research.

Management of lower limb deformities in children with osteogenesis imperfecta.
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) often leads to severe lower limb (LL) deformities due to recurrent fractures that significantly hamper ambulation. We describe our management experience of correction of LL deformities in four children with OI. Medical management consisted of peri and postoperative pamidronate therapy, calcium supplementation and rehabilitative care. Deformities were corrected with ...
متن کاملEffectiveness of prosthetic rehabilitation of children with limb deficiencies present at birth.
This study was performed to investigate the efficacy of prosthetic rehabilitation in children with congenital malformations, also to determine whether there were any factors related to family history and pregnancy which could have affected the formation of such deficiencies. Twenty-five (25) limb deficient children were provided with prostheses and received rehabilitation. A detailed family and...

BACKGROUND Unlike congenital auricular malformations which are identified by underdevelopment of dermal and cartilaginous tissues, deformed ears are less sever congenital anomalies characterized only by a misshaped pinna structure and can be improved with acceptable cosmetic results and minimal cost through ear molding if treated in early neonatal period. In this study, authors present the f...
متن کاملA study of 200 cases of congenital limb deficiencies.
An analysis of 200 patients with congenital limb deficiency who attended the Artificial Limb Centre, Pune from January 1984 to April 1990 is presented. This group is representative of the congenital limb deficient population of the country. The commonest deficiencies were transverse phalangeal total/partial deficiency and transverse forearm partial deficiency (below elbow) in upper limbs, where...
متن کاملOcular Defects in Thalidomide Babies.
IN the early reports on congenital abnormalities in thalidomide babies in Great Britain little attention has been paid to the occurrence of ocular defects. A recent survey by the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health relating to children born with congenital limb deformities during 1960-62, revealed that there were 652 surviving children with such deformities, 244 of whose mothers had...
